EMS Track

Goal: The overall goal is to develop a working skill set that can be used to provide medical oversight to EMS agencies, provide disaster planning and support to the EMS community, and provide expert instruction to EMS providers

General Requirements:

Successful Completion:

  • Minimum of 100 hours of “credit” during the residency program.
    • Must perform at least 15 credits per six month semester
      • The “credit deficit” must be made up in following semester
      • If credit deficit is not made up, resident will be put on probation
    • Each activity will have a certain predefined credit value based upon amount of effort involved in the activity and decided between the resident and mentor
    • The resident must complete at least ten hours in each of the “subspecialty” areas:
      • EMS Operations
      • Disaster Planning
      • EMS Education
    • Additional hours can be in any of the areas
    • Additional activities not listed here as approved by the mentor

  • Completion of a portfolio, publication or tabletop disaster exercise (including write-up) due to mentor by May 1 of the EM3 year
    • Failure to meet the deadline will result in loosing four credits per month until the deliverable is met
    • Both underlined bullets must be performed in order to successfully complete the track|

  • Monthly didactic hour during grand rounds
    • 1 credit per hour of didactics
    • Reading group format with Prehospital Systems and Medical Oversight
    • Seminar topics and discussions
    • Input into the EMS journal club
    • Overview of EMS educational requirements in NY

  • Assign the resident to one EMS agency to act as the Assistant medical director
    • Additional assignments may be made upon agreement between the resident and mentor for up to three agencies depending upon
      • Resident’s track record with assigned agency and prior familiarity with EMS operations
      • Number of providers, call volume, geography, and agency level of care

  • Must attend a minimum of two local Erie County EMS/Fire/Homeland Security courses during the residency
    • Accident Victim Extrication
    • Emergency Vehicle Operators Course,
    • Bioterrorism / Incident Command System courses
    • NY State Certified Lab Instructor (CLI) or Certified Instructor Coordinator (CIC)
    • Other courses as agreed between resident and mentor

  • Rotation resources developed on web site
    • Consist of articles, links, curriculum enrichment, etc
    • Reviewed and updated annual by EMS fellow with advice from faculty

Specialty Areas:

EMS Operations Activities:

  • Must have regular contact with the agencies on at least a quarterly basis.  Examples of contact may include:
    • Semiannual skills
    • Didactic sessions
    • Drills
    • Quality improvement audits

  • Involvement in specific issues related to that agency
    • QI
    • Pilot recertification
    • Other logistical issues
  • Involvement in general operational issues (examples not limited to this list):
    • Dispatch
    • Risk management
    • Legislation
    • Legal issues
    • Billing

  • Attendance at OPC/EMS staff / operations meetings as available

  • Additional ride time with Rural Metro, Mercy Flight, and OPC/SMART (In addition to what is required during the EMS rotation)

  • Involvement with a tactical unit (e.g. BPD, FBI)
    • Regular attendance at training sessions
    • Attendance at call-outs when available

  • Consider attending NAEMSP Medical Director’s course, CONTOMS training, etc

Disaster Planning Activities:

  • Complete additional on-line FEMA courses (especially disaster planning self study)
  • Complete ICS-200 through 400
  • Attend SMART training sessions
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate a SMART training session
  • Attend disaster related meetings as available (e.g. LEPC, hospital disaster committee, etc)
  • Activities must occur regularly on a quarterly basis
  • Consider attending NDMS or similar disaster conference

EMS Education Activities:

  • Regular involvement (at least quarterly) in EMS didactic or skill instruction through ECC / Erie County EMS
  • Auditing NYS CLI and/or CIC Course
  • Discuss learning styles, instruction strategies, and application of educational theories to EMS education
  • Thoughtful integration of technology and multimedia into EMS education
  • Appropriate use of partial task and whole task trainers
  • Simulation and scenario creation for EMS
  • Discuss basic concepts of educational research
  • Become BCLS, ACLS, PALS, BTLS or ATLS instructor (any or all)
  • Contributing to EMS trade magazine (JEMS, Emergency Medical Services) or chapter author for EMS text
  • Consider attending NAEMSE, Society for Medical Simulation or other medical educational conference
